Pura Vida
Costa Rica is one of those countries that needs little introduction to most globetrotters. Most travelers have this natural paradise on their “bucket list”, as it delights with its abundance of animals and plants. Cloud forests, rainforests, lakes, volcanoes, the Caribbean coast and surf beaches on the Pacific offer something for everyone. There is hardly any other country where you can get so close to the most amazing animals. Tropical birds, sloths, turtles, hummingbirds, monkeys and anteaters don’t usually require days of jungle expeditions; a short walk, the right accommodation and a watchful eye in the car are all you need to observe these animals at close range.
Costa Rica is the cleanest, most prosperous, most American and most touristic country in Central America. It has remained mostly neutral politically over the past century. In contrast to its neighbors, there have been hardly any conflicts, no civil wars and little outside interference. Of course, we were very excited to see Costa Rica’s wildlife and were looking forward to cleanliness, good roads and fantastic places to spend the night with our camper.
However, all this beauty comes at a price. Entrance fees to national parks are high, every waterfall, hiking trail or viewpoint costs money. Campsites, supermarkets and restaurants also have northern European prices. A challenge for our travel budget. Would we be able to find ways to experience Costa Rica in all its beauty on a limited budget?
“Pura Vida” is the motto of Costa Ricans. It is more than just “pure life” in its literal translation. It is a lifestyle, a feeling, a perspective that expresses how people here appreciate the simplest pleasures of life and take joy in the little things. It is a greeting, a way of making the other person feel welcome. Wherever one goes and one stands, “Pura vida” is everywhere in Costa Rica and it is contagious!
